MDCAT Marks Converter

Type a mark into any exam — Matric, FSC or MDCAT — and see the equivalent in the others by merit impact, not raw percentage. It’s the honest way to compare marks across exams that have different totals and different aggregate weights.

How marks compare

Matched by effect on your aggregate (MDCAT 50% · FSC 40% · Matric 10%):

  • 1 MDCAT mark ≈ 8.33 FSC marks ≈ 33.33 Matric marks
  • 1 FSC mark ≈ 0.12 MDCAT marks ≈ 4 Matric marks
  • 1 Matric mark ≈ 0.03 MDCAT marks ≈ 0.25 FSC marks

Type a mark in any box; the rest fill in with the same effect on your merit.

What “one mark” is really worth

Marks aren’t interchangeable across exams, because each exam contributes to your aggregate differently. The merit value of a single mark is that exam’s weight divided by its total:

  • 1 MDCAT mark ≈ 50 ÷ 180 ≈ 0.28 aggregate points
  • 1 FSC mark ≈ 40 ÷ 1200 ≈ 0.033 aggregate points
  • 1 Matric mark ≈ 10 ÷ 1200 ≈ 0.0083 aggregate points

So in merit terms, one MDCAT mark ≈ 8 FSC marks ≈ 33 Matric marks. That’s why the MDCAT is where extra effort pays off most — and the converter above turns any mark into its equivalent everywhere else. To plan a target score end to end, use the aggregate calculator.

Note: weightings and totals are estimates that vary by province, university and year — verify your target university’s current admission policy, and edit the totals in the converter to match yours.

Frequently asked questions

How do you compare a MDCAT mark to an FSC mark?
By merit impact, not raw marks: each exam’s weight divided by its total. One MDCAT mark adds about 0.28 to your aggregate (50 ÷ 180), while one FSC mark adds about 0.033 (40 ÷ 1200) — so one MDCAT mark is worth roughly 8 FSC marks in merit terms.
Why isn’t one mark worth the same in every exam?
Because the exams have different totals and different weights. A mark out of 180 on the MDCAT counts for far more merit than a mark out of 1200 on the FSC, even though both are “one mark”.
Which marks should I focus on improving?
The MDCAT — it has the highest merit impact per mark, so each extra MDCAT mark lifts your aggregate more than an extra mark anywhere else.
Are these weightings exact?
They use the common 50/40/10 estimate and standard totals. Weightings and totals vary by province, university and year, so confirm your target university’s current admission policy. You can edit the totals in the converter.
